Bearings explained

How do bearings work?

This is a commonly asked question by a lot of our customers, so we thought we’d explain the differences and the benefits of each.

Plain bore is still the most common wheel centre found, due to the cost. It’s simple and often used in wet environments or environments where there is likely to be residue gathering in the wheel centre. Other it offers little benefit, to the user, when manoeuvring a trolley. As it’s so simply it still has its placed and there is very little to go wrong or wear out.

The purpose of a bearing is to reduce friction between the wheel and the axle, the reason that roller bearing and ball bearings do this is because there is less friction due to the reduced contact of surface areas.

The benefits of using a ball bearing over a roller bearing:

  • Reduced rolling resistance (easier to push).
  • Continued motion; rolling resistance is the force required to keep at constant speed.
  • Best starting characteristics (easiest to get going).
  • Ease the physical effort of the operator required for heavy loads.

Usually this kind of bearing is only used for medium to heavy duty applications, however interestingly it is becoming more and more popular to use them in light applications.

As the push for better health and safety, in the workplace, comes into force. Onus is on ease of use and seamless operations. Introducing ball bearings on lighter duty items makes them almost effortless to use. We can now offer this within our standard ranges on our Series 60 and softer series 61 tyres.
